FIRE SAFETY CHECKLIST

PLAN AHEAD

Locate the exits. After checking into your room take a moment to locate those exits closest to your room. A map of your floor is posted on the back of the door in your room.
Plan an escape route. Make a mental note of whether your primary exit is located to your left or your right as you exit your room. Also note the number of rooms between your room and the exit.
Take your key. Always take your room key with you if you leave your room under emergency conditions. Your room door locks automatically when closed. Don’t lock yourself out.
Know the location of fire alarm boxes. Take a moment to determine the location of fire alarm boxes in the hallway.

EVACUATION PROCEDURES

Notify the operator. If you smell smoke or any unusual odors, or sense the possibility of danger, call the operator immediately.
Check door before opening. If you smell smoke or hear an alarm, pick up your room key and go to the door. Feel the door before opening. If the door is hot, do not open it.
Exit quickly and wisely. If there are not flames, proceed quickly to the nearest exit.

Smoke usually accumulates close to the ceiling. Even in heavy smoke, there is often still plenty of good air close to the floor. If heavy smoke makes breathing too difficult, stay low as you make your exit.

Leave the area. Once you reach an exit, walk down the stairs while holding onto the handrail. Exit the building quickly, and get as far away as possible. Under no circumstances should you attempt to reenter the building for any reason, until directed to do so by proper authority.
An emergency assistance area is located in the North and South stairwell. Assemble in these areas. Security and safety personnel will assist you to the ground floor from this area.
Never enter an elevator during an emergency situation.

SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES

If the door is warm or hot, or if the hallway is filled with smoke, you can most effectively protect yourself by staying in your room.
Fill the bathtub with water. Use wet sheets or towels to stuff the cracks around the door. To help yourself breathe, use wet towels to cover your mouth. Use your ice bucket to drench the walls, mattress, rugs, drapes, etc.
While waiting to be rescued, remain visible. Do not hide in the closet.
Place a towel or other item in the window to let firefighters know that someone is in the room.
